| REGULAR LINKS Sort by: PageRank | Hits| Alphabetical | Pegoretti Cicli Pegoretti Cicli, famous for their work building frames for professional road racing teams, frames have been ridden to many major victories in the professional cycling world. First to use TIG welding in Italy. If you want a real pro' quality frame, but built for you, you have just found it.
History:
We acquired almost all of our knowledge and expertise from Gino Milani. Not know in the cycling world at large, Milani was one of the most brilliant Italian frame builders of the Seventies. At that time his work influenced all major bicycle manufactures. When Cicli Milani closed down in early 1990 we moved to Illasi. The town of Illasi, not far from Verona, is well know for it's wonderful wines. Since 1987 we have been building top quality bicycle frames, and the first in Italy to use TIG welding techniques. Our first TIG welded frames were made with the famous tubes produced in France by Excell. From 1991 through to 1997, we built frames for pro road teams. We also worked on tube geometry and designed the DynaLite and Radius tube series which are marketed by Dedacciai. Since 1997 we have exclusively designed and created frames carrying the Pegoretti name. Our limited output is based upon the best available materials. Each frame is developed according to the individual morphology and cycling requirements of our customers. In 1999 we moved to Levico Terme, a few miles from our home town near Trento. Levico is a beautiful resort in the Dolomites, and has several times been home to the mountain stage of the Giro d'Italia. Since we came to Levico, we have redesigned our frames, working on the assumption that an all-round tube profile offers the best compromise between lateral strength and resistance to torsion. Such a choice exploits to the maximum the concept of oversized frames.

| | Sweetpea Bicycles We specialize in building bikes for the ladies, bikes that fit.
We have one incredible bike builder.
Her name is Natalie, and she is one of only a handful of women bike builders in North America. With a background in architectural design and six years as a professional rider (cough, bike messenger), Natalie has been designing and building bikes for the last three years.
We take bike design seriously. While most folks take measurements and plug numbers into a formula, we try as often as possible to do a real fitting - to see the rider in motion. There is a lot of experience, miles, and muscle memory that you need to work into the mix, and we think this is the best way of dialing things in. We have strong feelings about this, and we have one of the best fitters in the country.
Sweetpea Bicycles is a member company of 1% For The Planet and is located in Portland, Oregon.

| | Curtlo Cycles What makes a Curtlo a Curtlo? Doug. That's it.
For over 20 years Doug Curtiss has been crafting Curtlo frames one at a time. Steel is his favored metal of choice, but he has dabbled in Easton Aluminum from time to time (remember the Viper). A few years ago the now defunct Bicycle Guide magazine summed up Doug's experience: “Technically, Curtlo Cycles came into being around 18 years ago, when Doug was still in college. Although no official company existed back then, Doug built his first bike as a solution to the problems that he and his riding partner - who were both big guys - were having with the quality and fit of the bikes they were forced to choose from. Back then, riding was a priority for Doug. And after college, he put in as many as 15,000 miles a year, including four cross-country journeys and a four-month trip through Europe. Doug certainly has the miles in his legs to offer some expert advice as to what might work when it comes to designing and building bikes.”
It his hard to describe the "feeling" of riding a custom, hand-built bike, but there is a difference. The vast majority of riders out there get used to a three-sizes-fit-all mentality, and probably ride on frames that could fit their body and style better. This is where Curtlo Cycles comes in. There is no big production line, no trillion dollar bike-machines, only Doug and his torch.

| | Jeff Jones Bicycles The Ride
A Jones is a high-performance non-suspended bicycle. The ride is both efficient and comfortable and the handling is immediate and assured. With the default choice for off-road cycling nowadays seemingly suspension before anything else it might seem odd to ride rigid but that is the last thing my bicycles are – the geometry and construction provide an extremely satisfying and direct connection between the rider, the trail and the bike. It's pure cycling and a lot of fun.
Yes, there are brilliant riders with suspension technology truly exploring cycling possibilities. Pushing the envelope and all that. But this style of riding and type of bike might not actually suit everyone, whatever the adverts are telling you. Read the adverts carefully. A simple bike can be amazing. There is immense satisfaction to be found in riding the trails as they are – not a version filtered by damping, compression and sag. To ride without the flattery of bloat ‘n’ float – less really can be more. It’s delightful when all your steering, pedalling and subtle weight shifts make an immediate difference to your ride. Sure, it’s not for everyone, some people won’t want or like it, but for those who can appreciate this kind of riding and this kind of bicycle then a Jones is the very best bike available. It’s agile, precise, efficient and comfortable. It’s fantastic fun. It’s dynamic. The Jones geometry delivers a rigid bicycle that is anything but – frame and forks designed in harmony to deliver a pure cycling experience like no other. The high-performance, non-suspension, bicycle.
vertical compliance | lateral stiffness | short wheelbase | truss fork (and a fat fork option)
lightweight | exceptional handling | big tire clearance | singlespeed or geared | 29"/700c

| | Land Shark The story of Land Shark bicycles is inseparable from that of its founder, John Slawta. Slawta’s early ambition was to become a professional artist. He received a scholarship from the Pasadena School of Art and Design, but got sidetracked by his hobby—building bicycle frames in his parents’ backyard tool shed. His frames attracted a cult following among cyclists who admired his precisely brazed frame joints and exotic paint jobs. He named his bike frames after the protagonist in an old “Saturday Night Live” skit that played off the “Jaws” movies.
Building bikes became serious business for Slawta and Land Shark in 1986 when he was asked to build several for a group of professional riders, including Andy Hampsten, Roy Knickman and Steve Hegg. Slawta responded by building what became some of the most sought-after bike frames available. A 1988 letter from Andy Hampsten, then riding in Belgium on one of Slawta’s bicycles, hangs on the wall in John’s Land Shark fabrication shop. “Thanks for the bitchin’ bike,” says Hampsten, who went on to win the Giro d’Italia riding his Land Shark.
Word spread from professionals, fanatical amateurs to weekend warriors, celebrities, and the rest of the cycling world. Clients include actors Harrison Ford, Woody Harrelson, Michael Nouri, Olympic volleyball great Karch Kiraly, ex-Laker Billy Thompson, former SF 49er Dwight Clark, and the list goes on.
As Land Shark grew, John moved his shop from Los Angeles, CA to Medford, OR in 1991, and continues building every Land Shark frame himself. Many are surprised to find that Land Shark is something like an army of one. “They ask me if I’ll tell the painter how to paint it, “ chuckles John, “and I tell them that I’m the painter, too.” Riders appreciate being able to talk directly to the man who’s building their dream machine. “You tell him what you’re looking for,” says Land Shark owner Glen Gann, “and he knows what to do.”
Even now, the most sophisticated custom bicycle frames rely not on computerized gizmos, but rather the work of a seasoned craftsman who combines mechanical talents his artistic flare. Slawta hand brazes all Dedacciai steel alloy frame joints, fusing the thin walled tubes with a small bead of brass. The specialized steel is too sensitive for traditional welding, and as John notes, “brazing is to ordinary welding like fine china is to plastic plates – it’s a little heavier but A LOT more appetizing.” Steel/carbon-fiber combination and all carbon-fiber frames from Land Shark require their own unique fabrication methods, perfected by Slawta.
Land Shark frames are as technologically advanced as is possible, but what really makes these bicycles unique is the paint finish supplied by Slawta. John expresses himself artistically with his bike frames. “My goal is to get people to react,” John says, “I like people to see the bikes and have to respond. I like people to look at my paint jobs and not know how I could possibly have done it.” At a time when many bikes are in staid, traditional colors, John’s Land Shark bikes are an art show on wheels.

| | Oswald Every Oswald frame and fork is constructed using only human powered tools -- no lathes, no milling machines, no 12-axis CNC laser molecule modulators, not even an electric drill. Sure, that means more sweat and toil for Tom Oswald, but what it means for you is that your bicycle will be created with the love and care that can only come from a person passionate about making bikes the right way. And the right way to build a unique human powered machine is with human power. Like the bicycle itself, Tom Oswald's building process is clean, quiet and efficient. It provides a peaceful work atmosphere, which allows achievement of the utmost level of craftsmanship.
With this method, each stroke of the file and every turn of the hand cranked drill becomes an investment in the ultimate quality of your finished bicycle. And you can be sure that when a framebuilder puts that kind of devotion into his work, the result is something greater than simply the sum of its parts. It becomes more than just a bunch of tubes and a shiny coat of paint. It is a machine with a soul, an artful expression of all that is wonderful about the world of cycling.

| | Thylacine Cycles It’s pretty tough trying to find a new custom bike, isn’t it? I’m guessing this is the 10th website you’ve been to today, right, and I bet you’re expecting yet another “We make the best bikes in the known Universe” spiel concocted by some PR/Marketing Wannabe, and some pics of yet another flashy Aluminium matte black powder-coated range of bikes, fresh off the boat from wherever, featuring ‘Circular Reticulated Anti-Pedal” or something.
As much as we hate to disappoint, you’re not going to get that from us. Thylacine Cycles is a different breed of custom bike. Here’s why.
Thylacine is a unique design based custom bike company, attempting to bridge the gap between Artisanship and Industrial Design. We love Artisanship, but hate it’s bearded, “Don’t hassle me, I’m ‘creating’” grumpiness. We love Industrial Design, but hate the way it’s become a tool to make something for 5 bucks and sell it for 200.
So what we’re doing is creating a unique melding of the two which creates a much better bike than it would be if it was created by either individually or created on a single premise. Bikes that are lovingly hand made with equal emphasis on form and quality, designed with a focus on the individual as well as the global bigger picture.
As well as the unique combining of Design and Artisanship, Thylacine Cycles is all about the journey. What we are interested in is the experience of designing a bike with a fellow bike nut. We want to know about you, where you ride, how your ride, what you like about your current bike and what you want from the dream machine we’ll be creating for you.
Most other custom bike companies simply get you to fill out a form, they send a drawing back, you mark any changes you want and that’s your custom experience. The Thylacine Cycles custom experience couldn’t be further from this. A typical customer calls us a few times, swaps 30-odd e-mails with us, and goes through 3-4 design revisions. For us, there’s no such thing as too much information.
In some ways the essence of what we do is a shared experience, at the end of which you just happen to get a kick-arse bike.
It’s the combination of those three factors – Quality Design, Quality Construction, and Quality of Experience that sets Thylacine Cycles apart. What doesn’t set us apart though is that essentially we’re just like you. Riding everyday. Putting in the miles on the road bike. Scooting around town on the singlespeed/fixie. Doing epic rides and enduros in the mountains. Dreaming of cycling adventures in far away countries.
There’s no question Thylacine Cycles is different. It’s a more personal, more real, more focussed way to design and build a custom frame.
I think you’ll like it.

| | Tom Teesdale Tom Teesdale is one of America's most prolific frame builders. From his start in 1976 to 2005 he has built thousands of frames. Many of these bikes were built under contract from some of the most famous names in cycling, Gary Fisher, Marin, Dean and Kona to name just a few. For a complete chronology of Tom's work look here.
Tom is now expanding the reach of his own line of hand-built frames to give you the opportunity to experience first hand what many people inside the bike industry already know, Tom Teesdale makes one of the best bike frames around.
Over the last 28 years, Tom Teesdale has quietly been building some of the finest frames in America. With feedback from riders as diverse as seasoned racers and recreational tourists, Tom knows the variety of riding characteristics people want, and builds his bikes accordingly. Tom works with both steel and aluminum tube sets from Reynolds, Columbus and Easton. All frames are available built from either material, including the tandem.
Teesdale specializes in Reynolds newest steel tubing, the 853. This tubing is made especially for todays popular TIG welding process which actually strengthens the 853 tubing during the heating process. Resulting in exceptional durability and lightweight.
For those who prefer the feel of Aluminum, Teesdale offers the finest from Easton. Oversize tubes make for lightweight and lateral rigidity.
Teesdale frames are made to be ridden... and ridden hard. His road frames hold up to the punishment of crit riding as well as that loading and unloading that goes with a summer of racing or touring. Off road riders punish their bikes even more, and Teesdales are built to take it.

| | Baum Fine bicycles in titanium and steel.
Hand tailored to your specification.
Darren Baum trained and worked as a certified aircraft engineer and stainless steel TIG welder before becoming a frame builder. His cycling career began as an A grade rider before a car accident in 1990 sparked a long-term interest in how biomechanics and the bike's impact on a rider's core stability can be used to increase performance.
Darren has been a frame builder for more than fifteen years, and has developed a unique design and construction processes that allow the size, stiffness and handling of each frame to be tuned to the precise needs of individual rider needs:
Today Darren is happily married with two children, advancing the art of titanium frame building, still riding and racing.
Regarding Quality
All stages of manufacturing from CAD design to tube mitring and butting to painting, are completed in-house — it's the only way to ensure total quality control.
We're fussy about the details, because that's what really makes the difference. We machine our own head tubes, bottom brackets and dropouts in-house to optimise the alignment, weight and stiffness of the bike, and we've developed our own processes for butting, shaping and heat-treating tubes that allow us to keep the original (and ideal) properties of the materials intact. All of our frames are painted in-house using a paint facility developed with PPG, the worlds leading supplier of high performance paints.
We select only the highest grade materials and components. Steel and titanium are both excellent materials for frames; they allow a wide range of tubes for customisation, do not fatigue and provide a good feel for the road or trail. Steel has a livelier feel, titanium provides more damping and yields a slightly lighter frame.
The way we assemble your bike is the way you'd want it if you were doing it yourself. Every bolt is torqued to manufacturer's specifications, cable ends soldered, bearings checked for alignment and smoothness and each bike test ridden and washed before it leaves the factory.
Every frame comes with a lifetime guarantee: 'if it is our fault we fix it – no questions asked' and we provide a low-cost rapid replacement service should your bike ever be damaged in a crash.
We still ride every day and still race, so we know how important it is to get it right from the start.
