| | Castelli TO CLOTHE A CHAMPION
THE CASTELLI STORY
We’ve been around since 1876, but the real history of our company began in the 1940s with Fausto Coppi, whom many believe to be the greatest man (or god) ever to climb on a bike. Il Campionissimo or 'the champion of champions' would ultimately become a hero to a post-WWII Europe, and the one to usher in the golden years of cycling. Coppi would go on to win the Giro at age twenty, take a break while the world fought, and then win it four more times between the ages of twenty-seven and thirty-three (twice winning the Tour those same years). He would become indisputably the greatest king cycling would ever know but the king, the Campionissimo, would need a robe.
Enter Armando Castelli, the tailor working with Vittore Gianni a small clothing company at that time. Castelli ad already been making garments for the legendary Gino Bartali, the biggest name in cycling to date and the rival Coppi would have to conquer. But Coppi wanted something more than what Bartali was wearing. Actually, he wanted something less-something lighter, to give him an edge on the climbs through the Alps sections of the Tour. So Armando did what no one had ever done before. He suggested they change the material and use silk for the jersey instead of wool.
Castelli creates, Coppi wears, Coppi wins. To the cycling apparel industry, Armando Castelli had just invented inventing. Over the next few years Armando became tailor for the gods. With every champion that came along he would find a new competitive edge to give him.
Anquetil, Van Looy, Moilenaers, Bahamontes, Baldini, Magni, Riviere. The skin suit, chamois, pockets on the back, zippered collars. For every great cycling champion that needed an edge, there was another Castelli invention that revolutionized the world of competitive cycling.
In 1974 Armando’s son Maurizio realized the power and innovative heritage behind the Castelli family name. With this he founded Castelli Sport, a company whose only goal was to create the most premium, next-generation racing clothing available. First gloves, then team wear, and then the innovation that would change cycling forever: Lycra®.
Maurizio thought this space-aged new stretchy material would make a good short. With Lycra, opportunity struck like a scorpion. Cyclists lined up outside the Milan factory to purchase the new short. The more innovations rolled
out, the more orders rolled in.
And the innovations for the gods of cycling continued. Merckx, Hinault, Moser. The windproof jersey, aerodynamic skin suit and sublimation.
Under Maurizio’s leadership, the Castelli name continued Armando’s legacy, shaping the world of competitive cycling as we know it today.
Today our company continues along this 131-year-old path of innovation.
Each year we invent new technologies and advance the modern champions of cycling in honor of the legacy Maurizio and Armando left behind. Rosso Corsa products like our Free Bibshort, the Split Second Jersey and the remarkable 70-gram Superleggera jersey are our most recent additions to the legend our forefathers created.
And we will continue to provide the cycling world with new innovative apparel as long as the cycling world continues to provide us with new champions.
